People are often drawn to Florida for its warm weather, beautiful beaches, and outdoor activities. Additionally, the state's business-friendly environment and lack of state income tax make it an attractive destination for professionals and retirees alike.

Moving to a new state can be overwhelming, but with the help of our real estate company, you can rest assured that you'll find the right home, in the perfect location, all while taking advantage of the many benefits that come with living in Florida.

Benefits of Moving to Florida

The cost of living

Florida's cost of living is relatively affordable compared to other states. Per the Missouri Economic Research and Information Center, in 2022 Florida was the 31st cheapest state to live in. It ranks just 2.8 points above the national average index for cost of living. That CHEAP for somewhere with the nations most beautiful beaches!

Affordable housing options are available, including single-family homes, condos, and apartments. The cost of living on the beach isn’t cheap, but move inland just a few miles and you’ll see a dramatic drop in the cost of living.

Florida is one of only seven states with no state income tax, which can save residents thousands of dollars each year. This is great for entrepreneurs, careerists, retired, and those just passing through.  Find out more about Florida tax laws and regulations here

Weather

Florida's warm and sunny climate is perfect for those who love spending time outdoors. North Florida can see lows in the 20’s and teens during the winter for a low and always pops up above freezing during the days. The warmth starts to come in around April and you can enjoy warm beach days through most of fall!  If you're truly looking to escape the cold, consider south Florida where sunny and 70’s is the worst of it.

With over 1,350 miles of coastline, Florida boasts some of the best beaches in the country, or even the world. We mean it, Florida holds multiple spots in the tops list of the best beaches in the country. Both on the Atlantic Coast and the Gulf Coast, if you can make it to a beach, you’ll understand. What to Do Before Moving to Florida

Research the area(s) you’re considering

Research different neighborhoods and school districts to find the right fit for you and your family. There is no shortage of diversity and you can find a town and neighborhood that will make you feel at home (minus the snow). It doesn’t matter where you come from, there is something for everyone here in the Sunshine State.

You’ll also want to check crime rates and safety concerns to ensure you choose a safe area to live in. If you want more info on crime where you’re moving, check out the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. It would also be prudent to check the sex offender registry to ensure you’re not moving into an area that may put your or your family at risk.

Take a moment to consider what’s important to you. Research local amenities and attractions to ensure you have everything you need nearby. If you like the idea of walking and biking to everything or want to live out in the sticks for some privacy, there are options.

Make a budget

Calculate the cost of moving and relocation expenses, including transportation, packing supplies, and movers. Moving isn’t cheap, but planning ahead can save you hundreds or thousands! A good plan can save you from needing extra days with a moving truck, extra nights in hotels, or needing to get a storage unit for your things. Have a plan and consider it may not go perfect. Having a back up plan will help save time, money, stress, and/or lots of headaches. The good news is if you do get stressed, the beach is never far!

Consider the cost of living differences compared to your current location, such as taxes, utilities, and housing. The opportunities can be limitless so if you need advice on the cost of living here, don’t hesitate to reach out, we can help get you connected to the pros anywhere in the state!

Plan for upfront costs associated with purchasing a new home, such as down payments and closing costs. This is where we can really shine for you (no pun intended). With an ever changing market, we will ensure you have up to date information on what your move will look like. Our team specializes in out of state and luxury moves.

Plan for logistics

Determine your transportation options and costs, including gas, car rental, or airfare. If you haven’t been here before, the infrastructure may differ a bit from where you’re coming from. Don’t get caught unprepared when you get here and not have the necessary accommodations set up.

Plan for the timing of your move and make any necessary travel arrangements. Again, if you’re used to taking a train or subway from the airport, you’ll need to find alternate options for how you plan on getting from the airport to downtown.

Update your address with banks, credit cards, and other important institutions. This is VERY IMPORTANT!!! The last thing you need is to get a fraud alert from your bank because you suddenly made a purchase on the other side of the country! Avoid having any cards or accounts locked by informing your bank or other financing institutions BEFORE you move.

Moving Logistics

Cost of moving

Compare different moving options, such as renting a truck, hiring movers, or using a shipping container. This can vary wildly depending on how much sweat equity you want to put into your move. You can D.I.Y. it all, find the required moving materials for free (or close to it) at garage sales or online marketplaces. You can also hire everything out, head to the beach and have a margarita! No wrong answers here, just make sure you’ve planned accordingly.

The average cost of moving to Florida can vary based on location, distance, and the amount of belongings you have. You may want to consider some of the larger items you own and where you’re moving into. It may make more sense to sell some furniture, law equipment, or vehicles and repurchase once you’re here. Especially if you don’t know where you are going to be settling just yet. No point in moving a ride on-mower if you’re moving to Miami!

Tips for reducing moving costs include decluttering, packing yourself, and scheduling your move during off-peak times. Traditionally this would be fall and winter. In general people like to move during the summer while their kids are out of school. This means the spring is full of people preparing for their move and the summer executing it. Moving during the slow season can mean cheaper prices and less hassle due to lower traffic and tourism .

Driver's License and Vehicle Registration

Requirements for transferring an out-of-state driver's license to Florida include providing proof of identity, residency, and passing a vision test. You can go to your local courthouse to get your residency established and transferring your driver's license is easy after that

The cost of transferring a driver's license varies but is typically less than $50. Also it can be done extremely quickly. Being raised in California, I was used to hours in the DMV for one simple thing. I can honestly say I’ve never spent more than 15 minutes in a Florida DMV. The process of getting a Florida Drivers License was a joy!

Requirements for registering a vehicle in Florida include providing proof of ownership, a Florida driver's license, and proof of insurance. If you don’t know, help can be easily found at the Florida DMV. It’s always easy to ask, what else should I do? Here is a checklist for you to use on your next move.

Insurance Requirements

Florida requires minimum insurance coverage for both personal injury protection and property damage liability. Homeowners insurance can be a bit tricky, but is an absolute must. We always strongly recommend getting multiple quotes and ensure you understand all the requirements around them.

It's important to make sure your insurance covers you before driving on Florida roads. Talk with your current auto insurance company and make sure you’re covered with whatever you’re driving during the move. If you don’t have rental insurance and are planning on driving your own moving truck down, you may need to upgrade.
